Sophomore slump or comeback of the year? Yes, that is the title of a Fall Out Boy song. But to answer the question, this year definitely falls squarely in the comeback category. Not only did I meet new people and learn new things, but I think I grew almost exponentially more as a person.
In the academic sphere, I took my first "real" nursing classes and learned far more about making beds than I ever wanted to know. I loved my classes - Fundamentals of Nursing, Advanced Fundamentals, genetics, pharmacology, pathophysiology, nutrition, and more. Through my courses I got to expand my knowledge of the medical sciences and learn about things I really cared about.
Not only that, but I had my first clinical rotation on the Neuro floor at UCMC and started volunteering at Good Samaritan Hospital. Getting to actually be in the hospital and see patients was kind of terrifying at first but was also incredibly cool. I feel like I'm so much more confident now with my skills and caring for patients and it's rewarding to get through a shift and feel like I've truly helped someone.
I continued my work with Bearcat Buddies as well this year, working with students at Hays-Porter Elementary School on their reading and math abilities. I always had so much fun seeing my student and having a new friend for a couple of hours each week. Plus, I ended up being interviewed for the local news.
In terms of honors experiences, I took another seminar, Issues in Biomedical Research, where we learned about the latest research and clinical studies related to diseases and other current medical concerns. It was a class that discussed some of what I was learning in my other nursing classes but it was also refreshing because it was so different and more in-depth than what I was learning elsewhere.
On a whole, it was a fun and rewarding year. I got to explore the city and explore my own interests and, most importantly, I had a good time doing it.
