Mini-experience project
What? My interest group for the mini-experience project explored the thematic area of community engagement. For our project, we decided to volunteer as ushers for the Children's Theater of Cincinnati during their production of Alice in Wonderland. This mainly entailed handing out playbills to people entering the theater and helping audience members find their seats or directing them elsewhere in the building if they were unsure of where to go.
So what? Many of the theater patrons were children and it was really worthwhile to see their excitement, especially those who were seeing their first play ever. Each child I gave a playbill to acted as though I had just given them the greatest present ever and it felt really nice to have a hand in making it a such a special day for them. This experience integrated many of the things I love (working with children, community service, the arts), and it was very meaningful learning experience in a way that I don't often get to encounter in the traditional classroom setting. Now what? After our volunteer time was over, I ended up signing up for the theater's email list so I could come back to volunteer again for future shows. I really enjoy the arts; I enjoy listening to almost all kinds of music, I love going to art museums, and I like to attend plays when granted the opportunity. Art in its many forms doesn't really factor into my degree, so I don't have many opportunities to engage with it in my day-to-day life. I enjoyed stepping somewhat outside of my comfort zone for this mini-experience, and I look forward to engaging in similar activities going forward. |

My mini-experience reflection assignment
|
Final reflectionBeing a global citizen scholar, to me, means that an individual is ultimately aware of the extent to which their actions affect other individuals worldwide. Not everyone has the opportunity to physically travel abroad, but having an understanding of other peoples and cultures is vital to being a good citizen, especially in the tumult of today's society. We each must be able to comprehend that everything we do, from whether we recycle or not to which political views and leaders we support, has a ripple effect on other people somewhere. I think, too, that it is vital to have knowledge of beliefs and cultures outside of our own, and being a global citizen scholar means we attempt to acquire this knowledge through our studies.
I personally feel it is my purpose in life to help as many people as I can, directly or indirectly. To this end, I will use my time and talents to pursue community service opportunities that give me a wider view of the communities in which I live. I also will keep the global perspective in mind as I make progress towards my educational and career-related goals. A good nurse must respect all people, regardless of where they come from or what they belief. I will make it a personal goal to be this kind of nurse and to reflect on what impacts my actions have on others. |
